Cheryl Cole hair: Angela Coia shows how to create the bouncy look

Big hair has been hot on the catwalk for months, with celebrities such as Cheryl Cole modelling the look. With the flared high trousers of the 70s being a must-have for your wardrobe this season, having big, bouncy locks will balance out the look.

Hairdresser Angela Coia showed two different ways to get big, beautiful hair with the help of styling products, equipment and two willing models, Francesca and Olivia. Angela said:

“Francesca has lovely long hair with a lengthy layer throughout but she doesn’t have curls. To build body back into that hair you do need a little effort and a bit of help from either tongs, irons, rollers and some product.

“We applied some product to her roots and dried it in. We also put the mousse on all over, it can go on globally, and that was dried in for extra, extra volume. As long as you dry in any wet products on the hair before you apply heat it’s fine.”

Heated rollers were used, which help to make the curls last longer and make the look a bit sleeker and more defined. For a bit of extra lift at the roots use a bit of backcombing, but don’t overdo it or your hair will look too big.

Olivia has naturally thick hair but to get the big hair look extra product is needed for extra volume. The key is in the preparation. Angela said:

“Spiral tongs were used for Olivia’s hair in a vertical direction so that you’re getting that real corkscrew curl. Afterwards you work through the curls with your fingers to pull through them and to loosen them up.

“In the salon it takes a good 40 minutes but when girls are young and single they’ve got time to make themselves look fantastic.”

Angela’s top tips for getting the big hair look are to use the right products as it won’t work without them, use the right equipment such as rollers, tongs or irons, and get as many tips from your hairdresser as you can. Practice makes perfect.
