Set in 1960s New York, the sexy and provocative AMC drama Mad Men follows the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue advertising, an ego-driven world where key players make an art of the sell.
Mad Men is said to have had the biggest influence on our catwalks and high streets since Sex and the City, with this season’s collections going mad for womanly curves. The Hour’s fashion expert Lynne McCrossan has some 1960s looks to show us using models with curvier figures.
First up is size 10 Lou, modelling the sexy secretary look similar to that of Peggy Olson from Mad Men. Her whole outfit is worked round a faded tartan skirt, £42 from Debenhams, and a sexy nude blouse, £35 from Oasis. Animal print shoes, £25 from Next, a £2.99 feather brooch from H&M and a £79.99 plaid cape from Zara finish off the look:
“We’re seeing capes up and down the high street at the moment,” said Lynne. “A wee tip is to go to vintage stores where you’ll pick them up second hand. Remember not to go too high on the heel with your shoes as it just wasn’t in fashion in the 60s.”
Next up is Lorna wearing a similar look to Joan Holloway, and Lynne likes the feminine look on her size 14 figure: This gorgeous floral print dress (£49 from Debenhams) has a sweetheart neckline, cinches in at the waist and kicks out, which is exactly what you want from the 60s.”
The dress is paired with purple shoes, £35 from Marks and Spencer, and a cameo brooch, £5.99 for three from H&M: “Women used to take key accessories, like brooches, which they used over and over again,” Lynne said. “Fashion wasn’t disposable then, you just had to make do with what you had.”
Last up is size 12 Lauren, modelling the Joan Holloway look. She is wearing a metallic dress, £65 from Next. Lynne thinks this dress is beautiful: “The dress is metallic thread and is going to be seen loads on the high street. The bust is really emphasized and the legs are shown off but the dress has long sleeves to give a sense of demureness.”
The dress is teamed with £25 nude shoes and an £18 matching nude clutch bag, both from Barratts.
