Hair removal techniques: Get to the root of the problem

With summer approaching it’s time to shave off that winter coat of hair, but who can be bothered shaving every few days when there are so many faster methods available?

Stylist Julie Hannah joined The Hour to demonstrate some of the longer lasting methods of hair removal, with Mixed Martial Arts fighter Jordan McColl and Glasgow Hawks rugby player Robbie McGregor as test subjects.

The most famous method of hair removal is waxing. While this has traditionally been the bane of women, increasingly men are opting for the smooth look.

Now a cold wax by Nair makes this easier than ever and costs just £6.59. This ready-to-use wax is rolled on the body and pulled off with the strips provided.

It works on short hair over 2mm long and also has a delicious fruity fragrance.

The Parissa Salon Warm Wax costs £12.99 and works in much the same way. Like the cold wax it rips hair out at the root and results can last for up to eight weeks.

This particular warm wax is made from 100 per cent natural ingredients and is warmed by using an everyday microwave.

For the more technically savvy out there, the Braun Silk Epil Pro Body Epilator from Argos costs £119. Like wax they pull hair out at the root, but Epilators are famous for being painful. Despite this, the body can get used to anything and regular use supposedly lessens the pain.

For even longer lasting results, the Intense Pulsed Light Professional Hair Remover from Riobeauty.co.uk costs £408. This device is only recently available outside the salon and zaps the hair follicle itself, disabling it’s ability to grow new hair.

This quick and effective treatment takes only a couple of minutes, but should be used every four to six weeks to ensure that the hair never comes back.
