Get ready to rock your socks off as the highly successful Queen musical We Will Rock You comes to Scotland. In its ninth year, the cast includes former Hear’say singer Noel Sullivan and Over The Rainbow’s Jenny Douglas and is an all-singing, all-dancing musical rockathon.
Writer and producer Ben Elton has fashioned a laugh-out-loud futuristic comedy incorporating more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs, with Brian May and Roger Taylor supervising the music. Lead cast member Jenny told The Hour:
“From a singer’s point of view [We Will Rock You] is a pretty big thing. I think that all the parts are really vocally challenging so as a singer first and foremost it is pretty much like your dream job.”
Scots-born Jenny sang the song ‘No-One Like You’ at her audition. The tune was written by Brian May and Roger Taylor as a tribute to Freddie Mercury and other rock legends who are no longer with us. Jenny said:
“When I went in there [to the audition] I was sitting with all the other girls and I was like, oh my god, it’s Brian May!
“When I went in knowing that, it just changed my whole approach to how I was going to sing it because it’s a really emotional song and it’s an honour to sing.”
Noel Sullivan plays the part of Galileo in the rockfest and previously starred as Danny Zucko in the musical version of Grease. He said:
“I’ve been working in musical theatre for eight years now, and working my way up the ladder as the lead man in We Will Rock You is the most incredible role I’ve ever had. With Danny you have to do it like John Travolta but with Galileo you are given the reign to make it your own.
“We had to do a workshop with Ben Elton, which was quite daunting because he’s very direct and knows exactly what he wants. For the final audition there were 35 people on the panel including Brian May and Roger Taylor, and you’re going in and singing Queen songs to Queen. It doesn’t get more daunting than that!”
Other stars taking part in the rockathon include X Factor’s Rhydian Roberts, actor Ian Redding, who played Tricky Dicky in Eastenders and Vernon Tomlin in Coronation Street, and Brookside’s Leon Lopez.
We Will Rock You will be showing in 2011 at Glasgow King’s Theatre from January 18 – February 19 and His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen from June 7 – July 2. The show will also be showing at the Edinburgh Playhouse from November 19 2011 – 7 January 2012. Check with each theatre for performance times.
