Billy Boyd starring in Proclaimers musical

Billy Boyd became one of Scotland’s best known actors after starring as a hobbit in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. After spending some time in LA he’s back in his native Scotland and is appearing in the stage version of The Proclaimers’ album, Sunshine on Leith.

He said: “It’s brilliant to have a Proclaimers musical. Every song in it fits the script and the songs push the story forward as much as the scenes do. It’s not one of these things where the story stops to fit the songs in.”

Sunshine on Leith, written by Stephen Greenhorn and featuring 21 much-loved Proclaimers’ songs, is about two men coming back from Afghanistan and trying to settle back in to Edinburgh life. Three very different love stories ensue and are intertwined to create a funny, poignant and hugely entertaining show.

“I play a guy called Davy who falls in love with an English girl,” said Billy. “This is the first time since my very first job out of drama school that I have actually been in a musical.”

The Scottish star still has fond memories of his time spent filming the Lord of the Rings trilogy in New Zealand: "We spent almost four years there on and off and it changed my life.

“The nine of us in the Fellowship got the number nine tattooed on ourselves in Elvish. When Peter Jackson heard about it he thought it was a great idea and got the number 10 tattoed on himself!”

Billy previously starred in Taggart as a person with Asperger’s syndrome, and he took it upon himself to play the role properly. “It was my first part out of drama school and I went out and met someone from the autistic society and someone with Asperger’s so I could play it right,” he said.

In 2006 Billy performed in the first ever show for the National Theatre of Scotland, HOME:GLASGOW, and he has appeared in several films including Seed of Chucky, The Flying Scotsman and Pimp.

Sunshine on Leith will be showing at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow from September 28 - October 2.
