Carol Smillie on how she turned into a Hormonal Housewife

Being a hormonal nightmare isn’t something that many women would admit to, but for Carol Smillie, it’s all part of the job for the next few months as she stars in a new theatre show.

Hormonal Housewives is pegged as a light-hearted look at being a woman today, through all the ages from teens to pensioners, and all the ups and downs that females have  to go through.

Explaining a bit about the play, Carol said: “This is a new theatre show that’s been co-written by Julie Coombe and her husband John, who I did Vagina Monologues with, (it’s) very funny sketches, a sort of Loose Woman type show. A women’s night out really.”

Carol, the former presenter of Wheel of Fortune and other TV hits including Changing Rooms, also starred in the stage play the Vagina Monologues a few years ago, but admitted that moving into acting wasn’t something that she had actively planned.

“I don’t actually know how this has happened to me...It’s not something I wanted to do particularly. The Monologues was a challenge and I’ve loved doing it, it was great fun and they flattered me I think, they said ‘you’ll be great, you can do this’ - and I like to scare myself,,” she joked.

Carol also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2006, finishing an impressive fifth on the show, and recently went on All Star Mr and Mrs, where she and her husband, Alex Knight, gave displayed an ever so slightly embarrassing lack of knowledge about each other.

She joked: “My husband and I have, contrary to public opinion, met each other before and we are still together, so there you go!”

However, for the moment all of her attention is focussed on putting on a great show in Hormonal Housewives all across the country, from Glasgow and Edinburgh, to Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness.

If you fancy seeing Carol in action, you can do so at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, The King’s Theatre in Glasogw, Caird Hall in Dundee, His Majesty’s Theatre  in Aberdeen and Eden Court in Inverness. Dates run from February 23 until March 11.
