Hollywood beckons for Scottish stunt cyclist Danny MacAskill

Danny MacAskill became a YouTube phenomenon after his stunt cycling video received over 13 million views. Since then the Isle of Skye native has been inundated with offers ranging from the circus to Hollywood movies.

The 24-year-old’s five min 37 second video has been watched by people across the world and the former bike mechanic is astonished by the reaction.

“It’s been really unbelievable since April,” said MacAskill. “I’ve had offers like the Ellen DeGeneres Show in the states wanted me over there. At the time I didn’t know what to do so I didn’t do that.”

The offers have been pouring in for MacAskill; in one day he was asked to appear in ten countries, while Red Bull lined up to sponsor him and filmmakers wanted to make a documentary about him. And the offers just keep on coming.

“I’ve been asked to do demos at the Scottish Cup final, at the football. I’ve been asked to go to a South Korean circus, things all over the world,” he said.

As for Hollywood, film directors and screenwriters David Koepp wanted the cyclist for a new movie about a New York bicycle messenger.

“A film Premium Rush has asked me to do some stunt work in it so we’ll see how it goes. It’s quite a daunting prospect to go into things like that.

“It’s something that would be cool to do, but I’ve got a lot of things like projects for my own stuff I want to do. So we’ll see what happens.”

MacAskill isn’t letting the attention go to his head, explaining that his priorities lie firmly with his cycling.

“Doing riding for myself and also doing the smaller stuff is very important for me. All these big offers are really cool and it would be fun to do some of the things, but I really want to keep my head screwed on and do what I love to do which is riding my bike everyday.”
