Having come second to Scottish singer Leon Jackson in the 2007 edition of The X Factor, Rhydian Roberts has forged a successful career for himself that has outlasted that of his victorious rival.
Having charted at number three with his self-titled debut album in 2008, Rhydian is back with his second studio album, titled O Fortuna. Staying true to his classical roots, the album even features duets with Bryn Terfel and Kiri te Kanawa, to follow up the one with Tony-Award winning singer-songwriter Idina Menzel on the first album.
“It’s more of a classical, contemporary album,” explained Rhydian. “That came from a meeting I had with Simon [Cowell] back in March trying to decide a direction to go in.
“It’s all come together all so quickly and I know it’s an awful cliché, but my dreams are coming true.”
Rhydian found his fame on The X Factor despite originally being written off earlier in the series because of his supposed poor attitude. The public warmed to him quickly however, being impressed by his big performances.
His classical style was different to anything seen before on the show and he feels that hindered his chances of winning the contest – although it has aided him in his career subsequently.
“Coming second in a show like The X Factor – although at the time it was disappointing – my type of singing is more classical,” said Rhydian. “I look back and think that – out of the thousands of people that auditioned – I did alright to come second.
“If you are going to win a show like The X Factor you’ve got to be geared more towards commercial pop. You are expected to release singles. I don’t release singles, just albums.”
He has gone on to establish himself as a solo classical artist and his first album sold over 500,000 copies. Despite his success, Rhydian insists that he isn’t resting on his laurels.
“You can never take anything for granted,” he said. “Everything that’s happened has surpassed my wildest dreams.
“I am very blessed and fortunate. It’s worked out very well for me.”
