Juliette Lewis is one of Hollywood’s most established actresses and has shared the big screen with the likes of Robert De Niro, Johnny Depp and George Clooney.
The multi-talented artist has been delving in the world of music for the last few years with her band Juliettte and The Licks and laterally, by herself as a solo artist.
“I really love the cinema but music requires much more of myself than movies,” Juliette said.
“I didn’t do movies for the last five years because I really wanted to find my audience, and really, really tour – to discover myself musically and really get into it.”
Juliette and The Licks broke up a year and a half ago after band member Tod went his own way.
“I was disillusioned and felt abandoned,” Juliette reflected.
The Hollywood star decided to put all her emotions into a new kind of music and began working alongside Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the Mars Volta to create a fresh new sound.
“It was a really personal record I wrote called Terra Incognita, which means unknown territory or unexplained territory, and that’s where I wanted to go, as a songwriter, and emotionally – to just get a bit deeper lyrically, in the groove.”
Recently finishing her tour of America, Juliette has flown across the pond to start a UK tour of her new album.
“I love playing Scotland I’m sure anybody will tell you…. it’s one of the best rock’n’roll crowds.
“[Scottish crowds are] mental, lively, proper hooligans, I don’t know if you use that in a bad way but I mean it in a good way!”
Despite never being formally trained in acting, it was her skills in the blockbuster hits that brought Juliette international success.
“The experience of working with [Robert De Niro] was so profound, so creatively deep,” she said. “He is just an intense energy in our scenes together. He was wonderful and gracious.
“I also enjoyed working with Leonardo a lot. I felt that we worked really similar. He is really intuitive and really down to earth as a person.”
