Taylor Ferguson shows how to shear years off with a good hairdo

A good hairstyle can make us feel better about ourselves, but it can also help to shed the years off our real age, according to celebrity stylist Taylor Ferguson.

“Our main accessory is hour hair, you wear it day or night, you can’t take it off and it can make such a difference to anyone,” he said.

Taylor added: “I think one of the things a hairdresser has got to do is nudge you along if you’ve had the same style for a long time, they should be keeping you abreast of what’s going on and change it (your hair) very subtly so you don’t even know it’s been done.”

The famous stylist, who has worked with the manes of the A-list, was tasked with the challenge of transforming The Hour viewer Brenda Williams’ look.

Taylor felt that Brenda’s hair shape wasn’t flattering her face as well as it could, was the wrong shade of blonde, so he soon got to work.

“What we did was we took all the weight off the back of Brenda’s hair, it was too long, I didn’t feel it was doing anything for her shoulders,” he said

“We kept the length at the front and gave her a new fringe. One of the main things we did is change her colour because it was too harsh for her skin, so we darkened it down and then lightened it up.”

Taylor added: “One of the good things about doing Brenda’s hair is she has lovely hair and I want her to enjoy it, I want her to feel she can throw her fingers through it. It’s easy to maintain, she’ll have no problem with it and she’ll feel better, it’ll make her feel so much more confident.”

Brenda’s hair was coloured with a mixture of highlights and lowlights to give a natural, blended finish, so she will get around 10-12 weeks out of her colour before needing it freshened up.

To ensure people get the most out of their hairstyle, Taylor recommends that they also use decent products that will properly care for their hair’s needs. “Use good products, the best you can afford, and ask your hairdresser what is best for you because one of the big mistakes people make is they use the wrong shampoo for themselves, they drown their hair with our soft water. So one of the best tips is use a good shampoo.”
