Car seat safety clinics: how small precautions can save lives

Scottish TV presenter Michelle Watt is a new mum, so making sure her daughter Jaymi is safe at all times is top priority. That’s why she decided to visit one of the In-Car Child Safety clinics which are currently being held all over Scotland, to make sure her little one is completely secure when travelling in her car.

“I’m visiting a car seat clinic to make sure my daughter Jaymi is travelling with me safely and to understand the importance of fitting a car seat properly,” she explained.

Michelle’s car is fitted with an Isofix car seat, and car seat safety expert Elaine Lorimer from Renfrewshire Council told her that is an excellent choice because of its sturdiness.

“Isofix is perfect Michele because there’s very little room for error,” Elaine said. “It has two yellow fingers that clip into the back of your car seat so it makes it physically solid.”

However, one of TV presenter Michelle’s main concerns was whether her car seat could be safely used in other vehicles. Luckily it can, and Elaine went through the correct procedure for fitting it safely step-by-step, using a seatbelt to secure the seat.

And visiting the car seat clinic was time well-spent in Michelle’s book, with the TV girl giving it the thumbs-up. “I feel I have learned so much today and it’s pointless having a car seat if it’s not fitted correctly, so you’ve really helped me out today because this little treasure is certainly worth all the extra effort,” she said.
