We spend a lot of time in our bedrooms so investing some effort in creating a sacred space that’s sumptuous and luxurious is definitely a job worth doing.
As we move into summer, it’s the perfect time to make some small changes that can have an astonishing effect, giving a dull room a drastic makeover.
Designer Linda Barker likes to take inspiration from a variety of sources when working on ideas, and thinks one of the best ways to do this is to use a mood board.
“As a designer I will always use mood board as a place to start my ideas and really I encourage everybody to do he same at home.
“It’s not difficult, it’s really just flicking through your favourite magazines and tearing out sheets form from there, collecting paint samples, fabric samples or maybe even wallpaper samples, and just sticking them down,” she explained. “I use a lot of natural inspiration in my work, things like a visit to the florist shop.”
It’s up to you whether to go for paint or wallpaper for walls, or both, but if you opt for a strongly-patterned print or colour it’s generally best to stick to using it on just one wall to avoid overload.
The next job is to select curtains and bed linen that complements the main colours in the room and creates a relaxed, inviting space. As the bed is the focal point of any bedroom, make sure you pick linen that’s both comfortable and stylish.
Then finally all that’s left to do is add in some accessories to personalise the room, such as candles, flowers, mirrors and picture frames.
“I bet you’ll be surprised to find out how easy it is to be inspired, especially if you take time to create a mood board beforehand,” Linda said.
“ I think there’s a little bit of designer flair in most of us, so why don’t you have a go at overhauling your home this year? You won’t regret it.”
