Becoming a dad for the first time.

I had always imagined that I would be a Dad by the time I was 30, so when my girlfriend, Jan, told me that she was pregnant, I was happy.

It all started with Jan telling me she was late. She was adamant that she was not pregnant and kept harping on that it had happened to her before - she had gone four months before without a period and wasn't pregnant then.

I suggested that she did a pregnancy test at the weekend when I saw her. I even made a bet with her that she was. She took on the bet and said she wasn't.

So when I was hanging up the washing out on the line, she went up to pee on a stick.
Her life-changing response was hilarious...

"Babes... I think I owe you a Tenner..."

How wonderful - I would become a Dad AND be ten pounds better off!

So, after THREE tests (all positive) we had to face up to the truth: She was pregnant, and I would be a Dad.
Wow! What a day!

The rest of the day was a bit of a blur. Although we decided to keep it between ourselves, after about an hour, half of our families knew.

I called my mum and told her...
"Mum, are you sitting down? Sit down, I have something to tell you..."

She took the news quite well actually. Not like I had expected. It was the same for my dad.
I was surprised. I had support, and everyone wished us congratulations! Not one person thought it was too soon (we had only been in a relationship for five months).

So, that was that. Now we face a whirlwind of midwives, antenatal classes, scans, checks and appointments.

The next main appointment is the scan at 12 weeks. The dating scan, as it's called, is the point where baby will be given a fairly rigid due date and it's also the point where us parents to be will see a picture of the baby in the womb for the first time.
I don't know what to expect, however I will bring you thoughts of the event once it happens.
