Summer beers with Tom Cannavan

Tom Cannavan is used to sharing his knowledge of wine on The Hour, but as a special treat for the summer period he visited the studios to reveal his favourite flavoured beers.

He said: “The tradition of adding flavours to beers goes back for centuries: We’ve always done it. But there’s been a bit of a revival at the moment and I’ve picked out three beers that have flavours added to them. They’re really summery flavours, so they’re perfect for this time of year.”

Alloa Brewery, Róisín Tayberry Beer, £1.79, Sainsbury’s

This Scottish beer has been flavoured with tayberries, a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. Its alcohol content is just 4.2 per cent, but its rich taste is complimented by the very delicate hint of the fruit.

Frederic Robinson, Ginger Ale, £2.09, Marks & Spencer

Brewed by Frederic Robinson in England, this dark beer has a full body with the ginger added later. Delicate but with a bit of spice, it is truly delicious and would go perfectly with Chinese food.

Westons, Premium Organic Cider, £2.49, Peckham’s

This is not a fizzy everyday drink, but it is something a little bit special with a 6 per cent alcohol content. With a smell of summer orchards, this one is truly refreshing.
