FEBRUARY

  • The Winter Olympic Games are held in Lillehammer, Norway.

MARCH

  • The first 32 women are ordained as Church of England priests.
  • Steven Spielberg’s Schindler's List wins 7 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director
  • A 9 year old Bosnian girl travels to Edinburgh to receive life changing treatment that will help her speak and eat normally. She was shot in the neck by a sniper during the conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

APRIL

  • The Rwandan genocide starts in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis were killed in the space of 100 days by Hutus. The atrocities were sparked by the death of the president, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down.
  • Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, is found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, sparking ongoing controversy over whether his death was a result of suicide or murder.
  • Former US President Richard Nixon dies of a stroke

MAY

  • Nelson Mandela is elected South Africa's first black president.
  • The Channel Tunnel opens between England and France.
  • Michael Jackson marries Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley.
  • Brazilian F1 driver Ayrton Senna, age 34, is tragically killed during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.

JUNE

  • Following the death of his ex-wife, NFL star OJ Simpson is arrested for murder after a police chase that unfolds live on television. A jury later finds him not guilty.
  • Serial killers Fred and Rosemary West are charged with the murders of 10 girls and Fred West's former lover Ann McFall. In January of the following year Fred commits suicide in jail.
  • An RAF Chinook helicopter crashes on the Mull of Kintyre while carrying more than 20 of Britain's top intelligence experts; everyone on board is killed.
  • Scottish Women, a topical chat show hosted by Kay Adams, holds a debate on football with professional players and their wives.

JULY

  • The MP for Sedgefield, Tony Blair, is elected as the new leader of the Labour Party. He goes on to propose controversial changes to Clause IV in the Party constitution, saying that Labour should re-think traditional ideas on the nationalisation of industry.
  • Brazil Wins the 1994 World Cup in the United States.

AUGUST

  • New Trading Laws allow shops in Britain to open legally on Sundays.
  • The Irish Republican Army (IRA) announces a ceasefire after 25 years of military activity.

SEPTEMBER

  • Popular American sitcom Friends is first aired on US screens.
  • Steve Coogan’s Knowing Me, Knowing You bursts onto UK TV screens.

  • George Foreman, 45, becomes the world's oldest heavyweight boxing champion. He beats Michael Moorer, 26, to win the IBF and the WBA titles.
  • The UK Lottery is introduced with an estimated jackpot of £7m
  • Jeff Bezos founds amazon.com
  • Voters in Sweden decide to join the European Union in a referendum.
  • Lads' magazine Loaded is launched.
