An extended interview with poet and novelist William McIlvanney.
Born in Kilmarnock and educated at the University of Glasgow, McIlvanney rose to fame when his second novel Docherty won the Whitbread Novel Award for literature in 1975.
McIlvanney gained further renown for his series of Laidlaw detective novels set in contemporary Glasgow. In this interview he talks about his working class roots and the critical responses to his most controversial work, as well as his working class upbringing and his religious and ideological education.
