1992 … The Trans Europe Express

It was the inaugural season of the UEFA Champions League but the champions of Scotland, Rangers had had to face the Champions of England, Leeds, for the right to appear in it.This was another Battle of Britain where a European future was the prize.

  • Despite being written off by many, Walter Smith’s plucky underdogs prevailed and Rangers booked themselves a place in the lucrative group stage of the new Champions League where they’d face Club Brugge, CSKA Moscow and French champions Olympique Marseille
  • Rangers went through the group undefeated losing out on a place in the European Cup final to Olympique Marseille by a single point.
  • Marseille won the cup but were sensationally stripped of their French title for match fixing… but bizarrely were allowed by UEFA to remain as European champions.

Watch exclusive extended interviews with the likes of Walter Smith, Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant, Stuart McCall, Richard Gough, Mark Hateley, Andy Goram and Gary McAllister  when this episode is transmitted on STV on April 8.
