The Full Story: 1986 ... Back to the future

 1986 was an incredible twelve months that turned Scottish football upside down.

  • Hearts came within 7 minutes of the league title only to have it snatched away in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable.
  • Celtic were Champions, Hearts finished runners-up and Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen won the Scottish Cup. Rangers were nowhere.
  • As the nation prepared endure another World Cup in yet another ‘Group of Death’, Rangers were planning to turn Scottish football on its head with the most dramatic appointment in the history of national game. They unveiled Graeme Souness as their new manager and gave him the funds to win the title for the first time in nine years.
  • With English clubs banned from Europe because of the Heysel disaster, Souness used his force of personality to persuade England stalwart Terry Butcher and Norwich goalkeeper Chris Woods to sign for Rangers… and the rest is history.
