When Alex Norton came up to star in Comfort and Joy in 1984, he was shocked to find another city than the one he grew up in.

“It was kind of a revelation for me”, Alex said to STV while discussing the Glasgow Comfort and Joy was set in.

“When I was 18 to go to London, Glasgow was this dark grim Victorian sooty city that I just couldn’t wait to get away from.”

“And when I came back up to do that film, they were cleaning all the buildings and it was like an old master that had been lost under years of old varnish,” he remembered.

Now more widely known as DCI Matt Burke in Taggart, Alex Norton starred as Mr Bunny in Bill Forsyth’s black comedy about a local radio DJ getting involved in the ice cream wars of Glasgow.

“I just thought when I read the script that Bill Forsyth had a vision of this new Glasgow and it was kind of represented I suppose by the Radio Station and the newness of things.”

He added: “Times had changed, things had moved on and so had the city.”

“But I never would have thought Glasgow could be kind of honey coloured.”
