Now better known as DCI Burke in Taggart, Alex told STV that starring in Gregory's Girl opposite Scottish comedian Chick Murray was a dream come true.
"Chick was an absolute hero of mine from when I was a kid and there was me working with him. I was quite awestruck," he said.
Gregory's Girl, the romantic comedy filled with teenage angst had the Scottish comedy legend playing the head master and Alex starring as the teacher Alec.
He explained what it was like working with his hero.
"Chic would do things like say: 'let's try overlapping our dialogue like in American movies'. So we’d try that and Bill [Forsyth] would look at it and say ‘Mmm, no just do it like it is in the script’."
He laughed and continued: "It was a wonderful experience to work with Chick like that."
Gregory's Girl is on STV on the 29th of March.
