Popstar to Operastar champ Joe McElderry has confessed that he may have taken the "wrong direction" with his debut album for Simon Cowell's Syco record label.
The 19-year-old was dropped by Cowell after disappointing sales of his debut album following his X Factor win.
Joe is about to release his new album, `Classic', for Universal records.
He told Daily Mail: "I really enjoy pouring emotion into a song. It was what I was known for. The first album, Wide Awake, was a new experience for me - going down an uptempo pop route.
"At the time I thought that was what I wanted to do. Now I want to do dramatic ballads. I went into Operastar because I wanted to grow as a performer.
"It's a whole new area of music, and it keeps me working hard."
Joe said that he now feels in charge of his career and is looking forward to the release of his new album.
He added: "I wanted to take the reins myself and be creatively involved in everything.
"I feel more in control this time. You throw yourself in at the deep end, and you're the one making the decisions."
