It’s a new year and that means a new set of influences shaping our wardrobes. Last year we saw a Mad Men 1950s and 60s influence on the high street, however 2011 will be all about a 1970s look.
Vintage is once again key to fashion in 2011, and many of the styles from last year will carry over with the emphasis on femininity and fuller longer skirts. Two particular trends from this era appearing on catwalks and stores are the bohemian look and 1970s glamour.
This also means jumpsuits and playsuits are back, something of a yo-yoing trend they look set to make a comeback this year. These can be fun day wear, a sharp office look or can be dressed up for a sleek evening style.
Another look surfacing on the catwalks is the crop-top paired with maxi skirts or bell bottom high-waisted trousers. Crop-tops are not particularly forgiving so beat the Christmas bulge before you bare all in spring 2011. If this sounds daunting why not revive some retro blouses from last year and team a tucked in pussy bow blouse with high waisted jeans and heels.
After the fitted look of 2010’s key pieces and the curve hugging 50s and 60s looks we now see a return to floating feminine forms, with wide leg trousers, sheer tops and maxi skirts and dresses. Look for clean but voluminous lines and if you’re going for trousers consider flares with a thin belt to accentuate the high waistline.
Another trend carrying on from 2010 is lace. Several high street stores have lace influenced lines in dresses and tops with intricate detailing breaking up the long forms of the new cut of clothes. Other detailing to make a come back includes crochet, macramé and tassels, which tie in with a more bohemian style.
