John Burton Race

The son of a British diplomat, John was born in Singapore and spent many years travelling the world and experiencing global cuisine.

John’s early working years were spent as sous chef at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, Oxford, and head chef and manager of Le Petit Blanc, Oxford.

After opening his own restaurant, L’Ortolan in Berkshire, John was awarded two Michelin stars.  He then moved to London’s Landmark Hotel where he won another two Michelin stars in his first year at the restaurant.

John’s television career took off following his series French Leave which followed the Burton Race family in France.  The series Return of the Chef followed the family’s return to England and the opening of John’s restaurant the New Angel in Dartmouth in Devon, which was awarded a Michelin star in its first year.

John has also appeared with Angela Hartnett on BBC’s Kitchen Criminals and was a regular contributor to Step Up To The Plate.  Most recently, John has judged the celebrities on Britain’s Best Dish Celebrity Special.  He also appeared in the Australian outback in the reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

Passionate about local produce, John will be looking after the team from the South West of England in Taste the Nation.
