Coronation Street actor Andy Whyment has been the butt of his Corrie castmates' jokes, since they discovered he was taking part in Dancing on Ice.

He said: “All the lads from work have been winding me up saying 'It's going to be like bambi on ice', and then they add 'when I watch it, I'll be hoping you fall.'”

Not one to be disheartened by a bit of 'friendly' banter, Andy’s determined to remain upbeat. “I'm looking forward to the whole thing. It's made me quite proud of myself."

Admitting that the first few weeks of training were a shock to the system, Andy says the most difficult part has been getting used to being on the ice.  Determined not to make a fool of himself, Andy says he’s “put a hundred and ten percent in” to make sure he doesn’t live up to the Corrie cast’s Bambi taunts.

“I'm not going to be an absolutely amazing skater but I'm not going to be dreadful either!  It's quite easy to stand up and skate around in a circle, I think most people can do that. It's when you start putting in movements, knowing what side of the blade to be on; I just find it really difficult.”

The actor, best known for his part as Kirk Sutherland in Coronation Street, is determined to give it his all, despite some early slip-ups in rehearsals with skating partner Vicky Ogden.  He said: “I'm not scared of falling. I'd be mortified but Vicky wouldn't ask me to do anything that she didn't think I could do.”

Andy has admitted that he feels more than comfortable in the tight-fitting lycra skating outfits, but that the customary fake tans are a step too far .“I said to the production team that I'm definitely not getting a spray tan! I'm all natural! It's absolutely not happening!”

Andy insists he really just wants to have a good time and enjoy his experience on the ice.

“I am competitive but there's always going to be better skaters there than I am. There are always three or four really good skaters, so I won't be one of them. I'm not really looking at rivals. I just want to enjoy myself and just get the most out of it as I can.”

No doubt his Corrie mates will enjoy this season of Dancing on Ice as much as him...
