Four celebrities were left to do battle on tonight’s nerve tingling live Dancing On Ice semi-final and The Bill star Gary Lucy found himself skating for survival for a place in the Grand Final alongside EastEnders star Danniella Westbrook, narrowly scraping through 3-2 after the judges had given their verdict.

As usual watching the celebs every move, with this week’s required element, a solo spot of at least 30 seconds were Ice Panel judges Jason Gardiner, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Nicky Slater, Karen Barber, and head judge Robin CousinsGary

He’d performed well in the original round. Dressed in electric pink  22.5 has been Gary’s  highest score so far so could he top that as he tried to make it through to the final. The answer was yes, with Gary and partner Bulgarian champ Maria Filippov scoring their best tally of the series so far with 24.5 in a routine to The Wannadies You And Me Song that featured a crucifix lift into swan carry; barrel rolls; hoover lift and a wrist ripper. Not to mention an unexpected jump Gary threw in for good measure.

Gary seemed pleased with the performance telling hosts Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “ I didn’t drop Maria, I didn’t take the camera man out-it went well.”

So did the judges agree? Some yes; some no.

Emma certainly liked it telling Gary: “You came out there and you gave it your all. Your performance is definitely getting much better. Sometimes you look a little bit self conscious. But your solo was strong; you’re a strong partner- you’re starting to excite me.”

Karen concurred declaring: “You have come such a long way. You’re always very solid in the lifts and your skating ability- I can’t fault it. For me you were on your toes a little bit but otherwise it was strong performance , well done.”

But just when Gary’s head was beginning to swell Jason brought him back down to earth with a bump telling The Bill star: “What can I say? You’re like skating valium. I’ve been here very week asking you to give me a performance. There’s no dynamism, there’s no thrill, no presentation. I’m sorry, punching up in the air was pathetic as well. You’re a good looking boy, but you are so boring. There was more energy and personality in your VT than what you brought to this performance tonight.”

In the end up however Gary kept his nerve, despite a last second fall on the ice that saw him end up on the floor cuddling his skating partner securing his place in the final by the narrowest of margins.

He now looks forward to competing in next week’s final show alongside Hayley Tamaddon and Hollyoaks bad boy Kieron Richardson to see who will be crowned this year’s Dancing on Ice champ.
